AFRICA

Some people believe we have a spiritual home. If that’s true, mine is somewhere in the African bush. I have never felt more connected to the earth, or more completely myself, than on the plains of the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, beside the Lower Zambezi in Zambia, or deep in the South African bush. There is something about being there, listening to the world wake before sunrise or watching elephants disappear into the distance, that I have never found anywhere else.

Africa has my whole heart, and photographing it is one of my greatest joys. But what keeps pulling me back goes far beyond its extraordinary wildlife. It’s the people I’ve met, the languages and cultures, the villages and cities, and the overwhelming sense of how much there still is to know. Africa is too often flattened from the outside into a single place and a single story, when it is an immense continent of profoundly different countries, landscapes, cultures and lives. Every time I return, I understand a little more, and realize how much more there is to learn.
